A complete gynecological exam includes a breast and pelvic
exam, as well as a Pap test (to screen for cervical cancer).
Screening for sexually transmitted infections, anemia, cholesterol
and diabetes is available, as is treatment for urinary tract
and vaginal infections. Peri-menopausal and menopausal services
are available.

PPRI currently offers a wide variety of birth control options:
Birth control pills, Depo Provera (3 month injection), NuvaRing
(vaginal ring) and Ortho Evra patch. We do fittings for diaphragms
and cervical caps. We insert and remove IUDs, both Mirena
(hormonal) and non-hormonal (ParaGard). We sell an assortment
of male condoms, the female condom and dental dams for safer
oral sex.
Permanent
Many women who have completed building their families know that they do not want to have another child. There are also women who know that they will never want to have a child. These women want birth control methods that are intended to be permanent. Permanent methods are provided with various surgical procedures — some require incision, and others do not. They are also known as voluntary sterilization — the most popular method of birth control in the United States. Procedures for women are called tubal sterilization.
Methods that are intended to be permanent are difficult and very costly to reverse. That is why it is very important that women who chose sterilization will be able to live with their decision for the rest of their lives — no matter what life changes they experience.

Women without significant medical problems may be eligible
for hormonal contraception (pills, patches, Depo shots and
Nuva Ring) for a limited amount of time, with optional or
delayed physical exam. Your blood pressure is taken and your
medical history is reviewed to make sure it is safe for you
to take hormonal contraception. Annual gynecological exams
are recommended for all women, but we realize sometimes that
is not possible.

Emergency contraception (formerly known as "the morning
after pill") is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected
sex. This is not the same as medical abortion or the "abortion
pill". EC should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected
intercourse. It is most effective if taken within 72 hours.
It is somewhat effective up to 120 hours.

care to females 13-19 and males 13-22. Services are provided
on a walk-in basis (no appointments) every Monday from 3:30
– 7:30 pm. Fees are on a sliding scale for those without
insurance.
The Teen Health Center staff is especially trained to address
issues important to youth. While we encourage teens to talk
with their parents or other trusted adults about sex, sexuality
and their reproductive choices, the State of Rhode Island
does not require teens to have parental consent before they
receive care for STIs or birth control. We will protect your
confidentiality. For more information that is specifically
for teens, go to www.teenwire.org.

PPRI offers surgical abortions under local anesthesia or
intravenous sedation, from 5 to 16 weeks. Medication abortion
(inducing an abortion with medication – formerly known
as RU-486) is available up to 8 weeks of pregnancy. Counseling is available if needed.
Unbiased decision counseling is also available for pregnant undecided clients.
For women under 18
In Rhode Island, women under 18 are required to have the
consent of one parent or legal guardian to have an abortion.
If this is not possible, the state provides an alternative
called "judicial bypass" which means you go to court
to have a judge determine that you are mature enough to make
this decision without a parent’s consent. We have counselors
at PPRI that help young women with this process and accompany
them to court.

Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment
PPRI offers cancer screening and treatment services for abnormal
Pap tests as follows:
Colposcopy is a procedure most often performed to further
evaluate an abnormal Pap test. The colposcope magnifies the
cervix so that microscopic abnormalities can be seen and samples
of tissue can be taken directly from those areas for analysis.
Colposcopy allows more accurate evaluation of cancerous and
pre-cancerous cellular changes.
Cryotherapy is a freezing procedure that destroys abnormal
cells. In about six or eight weeks, healthy cells will replace
those that were frozen and destroyed.
LEEP-Loop Electro-surgical Excisional Procedure – a
treatment for more severely abnormal Pap tests that cannot
be treated by cryotherapy.
