The Becoming an Askable Parent Program (BAP) is designed to
enhance communication and empower youth to overcome barriers
to their success. It is offered to youth between the ages
of 10 and 16 and their parents, “step-parents,”
foster parents, uncles or aunts, or any significant adult
in their lives.
The goal of BAP is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment
where youth can learn about sexual responsibility while developing
goals and aspirations for life. Young adolescents place their
parents at the top of the list of influences on their sexual
attitudes and behaviors.
This program will give parents the information they need to
talk to their children about sexuality. They can then convey
their values at the same time. We will help them formulate
the appropriate answers to their children's questions and
create “teachable moments.” BAP addresses self-esteem,
healthy relationships, sexual orientation, postponing sexual
activity and contraception.
It emphasizes the importance of academic education, community
service and leadership skills. It also helps parents convey
to their children that all the changes taking place during
puberty are normal.
There is a six week program and a 2 week program. Each workshop is taliored to the needs of the group.
