Loyal friend, dedicated board member, faithful advocate of sex education for teens and most generous philanthropist
Ann Fessler, Guest Speaker
Ann Fessler, a visual artist and professor at Rhode Island School of Design, is the author of The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden Stories of Women who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe vs. Wade. www.thegirlswhowentaway.com
Fessler was awarded the prestigious Radcliffe Fellowship in 2002, which she used to travel the U.S. and interview numerous women who were coerced and shamed into relinquishing their babies for adoption in the ’50s, ’60s and early ’70s. Her book reveals the decades of time before sex education, accessible contraception, and legal abortion.
Now, in a period when the future of the Roe decision is subject for intense national debate, Fessler offers a startling new side of the story; the plight of birth mothers who had no other choice.
Ann Fessler was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award for non-fiction.
Cecile Richards, Guest of Honor
Cecile Richards is the President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Richards’ twenty-year-long history in progressive politics and the reproductive rights movement includes her founding and serving as the President of the Pro-Choice Vote in the 2000 election cycle and serving on the board of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
